S.O.S. in Middleton Cheney.
26th November, 2016. John Riches reports.
Save our Surgery was the cry of local people who gathered in the centre of Middleton Cheney. Sophie Johnson Chairman of South Northamptonshire Labour Party explained that the GP surgery closed at the start of October and the building was put up for sale. Patients now have to travel to the Oxfordshire town of Banbury to consult with their doctor. Middleton Cheney Parish Council has applied to obtain the building as a community asset with a view to getting it reopened as a surgery for local residents. Local people affected have been asked to sign a petition that is available in the pubs and shops around the area.
Caroline Duncan commented at the gathering that she felt the closure of the Middleton Cheney surgery was terrible. It has served the local people very well over the years. What are people without their own transport to do now she asked?
Villager George Emerson who uses a mobility scooter to get around explained that he now has to ask the doctor to visit him at home when previously he could get to the surgery on his scooter. He is well known in the village and has always been a rabble rouser. He hoped that his support would draw attention to getting a surgery back in his village.
The event, organised by South Northamptonshire Constituency Labour Party was part of a National Day of Action to support our NHS.
Sudden closure and sale of Middleton Cheney GP surgery
We are concerned and saddened to learn that the Middleton Cheney GP surgery abruptly closed at the start of October 2016 and is now up for sale. We understand that the GP has retired for personal reasons, and this is by no means a criticism of the Doctor in question; however, given the size of Middleton Cheney, and the surrounding villages that it serves, we call on the local council and the NHS to find a way to keep a surgery open in Middleton Cheney. Please contact us if this has affected you.
